Residents say planning rules change will boost Belfast Airport runway plans
A campaign group opposed to the runway extension plans at Belfast City Airport have criticised draft planning rules changes as they believe they could make it easier to pass the scheme. Draft planning policy guidance would see the economic benefits of any development a determining factor in approving an application, local resident's lobby group Belfast City Airport Watch said.
Increasing the number of visitors to Northern Ireland is among the stated benefits of the runway extension. Liz Fawcett, spokeswoman for the group, said: ‘If this planning guidance comes into force, it would completely shift the goal posts on the runway extension. It is wrong for the Department of the Environment, which is meant to protect our environment, to be proposing that these concerns should be brushed aside for the sake of economic benefits.’
