Anti-expansion campaigners have branded plans submitted by Bristol Airport as 'reckless and unnecessary', the Mercury reports. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) say the airport must not be allowed to carry out the £150m expansion.
Bristol Airport wants to expand its facilities to be able to cope with an increase in annual passenger numbers of 60% to 10m. If the planning application submitted this week, which includes a two storey terminal extension, aircraft parking stands, a multi-storey car park and new airport hotel, is successful work will start next year.
SBAE says the proposal should not be approved until green technologies and transport links are in place. Its spokesman said: ‘We believe that these plans for expansion are reckless and unnecessary.’ Passengers at the airport are down by 20% this year compared to 2008, so they could well make the case on the need for the expansion at this time.
