The first ever direct flights between Edinburgh Airport and New York's JFK were launched today. Delta Air Lines kicked off the year-round daily service connecting the Scottish Capital to New York's biggest and busiest airport. [Continental Airlines already operates flights from Edinburgh to Newark, New Jersey, but this is the first flight to JFK.]
A spokesman for Delta Air Lines said the new route was launched to meet customer demand. He said: ‘We are delighted to offer customers from Scotland the opportunity to fly non-stop to New York, the world's largest travel market and leading financial centre.’
David Johnson, Edinburgh Airport managing director, said the new service was a ‘fantastic addition’ to the airport's route network. He said: ‘As well as being a key gateway to the US, JFK is a major hub and offers a huge choice of onward connections. Travellers flying from Edinburgh will benefit from up to 36 connections [from Delta] throughout the US, to Latin America and to the Caribbean.'
The launch of the new direct service from Edinburgh to JFK has also been hailed by inbound tourism officials. Denise Hill, of VisitScotland said: ‘Delta's new flight offers us a great opportunity to position Scotland as a must visit, must return destination in our biggest international tourism market.’
