Hundreds of flights axed in the last year

22.06.09

Hundreds of flights a week from UK airports have been cancelled over the last year. And the situation is likely to get worse when rises in air passenger duty (APD) tax take effect, private aviation company Jet Republic said yesterday.

The company said that between March 30 2008 and October 24 2009, up to 969 weekly direct flights have been axed at the 10 leading UK airports, representing a total of nearly 131,000 seats. APD rises are planned for November this year and November 2010, and Jet Republic said the increases is likely to lead to a reduction in the number of people flying. This could, in turn, lead to more routes becoming loss-makers and airlines axing them.
