Flyglobespan passengers endure 32 hour delay

Over 180 holidaymakers were stranded in Spain for 32 hours after a Flyglobespan flight to Glasgow Airport was delayed because two tyres on their plane were damaged in a freak incident, the Evening Times reports.

The flight was set to leave Alicante Airport on Monday at 11:00, but the passengers were told they would not be taking off until the afternoon. However, at around 22:00 the 182 travellers were taken to local hotels for the night. When they were returned to Alicante airport the next morning, the plane was still not fixed and they only arrived at Glasgow Airport at 21:00 on Tuesday - 32 hours late - on a replacement aircraft.

A Flyglobespan spokesman told the newspaper that the delay had been caused by a highly unusual technical problem that was outside the expertise of its engineers at Alicante Airport. Replacement tyres had been flown out from Edinburgh, but the Spanish airport did not have a hydraulic lift able to support the plane while they were changed. A lift and engineer were then flown out from Glasgow, and a back up plane was sent to collect the passengers.

The spokesman insisted a representative of Flightcare, which deals with its customers at the Spanish airport, was available at all times for information and advice. He also said passengers were provided with breakfast and meal vouchers throughout the delay. However, passengers were reported to be upset with the way they were treated by Flyglobespan. One told the newspaper that they were left waiting for 5 hours before being offered anything to eat or drink - and even then they received a roll, jam and a bottle of water. She said that one elderly lady fainted in the heat.
