New BAA Airport parking £10 car change 'fine'

21.07.11

If it is not bad enough that they charge you for an extra days parking if you stay 5 minutes over your allocated airport parking time, BAA's car park operator has found a new way to extract money from unsuspecting travellers - a car change 'fine'.

Not sure which car you will use to drive to the airport (and therefore park in an airport car park), so you leave the field on the online booking form blank? Or change your mind and use a different car to the one you included in your booking? Or just get the number plate wrong? Well if you are parking at a BAA airport car park, that will cost you a £10 'fine' !

The UK's biggest airport operator has told car park companies that they must supply customer's car registration numbers. And it needs to be the right one. If they change the car they travel in, they need to provide the new details before they reach the airport.

Any customer you fails to do this will be forced to pay £10 when they leave, "because if [BAA] do not have the right registration number, it holds things up when you arrive and leave." Perhaps they could teach Ryanair a thing or two !

This currently affects BAA's airport car parks at Heathrow, Stansted and Southampton. We assume its Scottish airport car parks (at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen) will follow suit soon.
