IAG could buy stake in American Airlines

BA parent IAG is considering buying a stake in American Airlines to stop it falling into the hands of rival airlines, travelmole reports. US Airways is in talks with American Airlines’ creditors about a takeover before it finishes bankruptcy proceedings, and Delta is also reported to be interested.

IAG wants to protect its revenue-sharing joint venture on transatlantic routes with American, who would also be forced to quit the Oneworld alliance if it merged with a rival airline. IAG chief executive Willie Walsh is reported to be studying several options including buying a stake in American.
