BA, American Airlines and Iberia have offered to changes plans for a joint venture on lucrative transatlantic routes in an effort to gain antitrust approval from European regulators, an EC spokesman said yesterday. He gave no details of what the airlines have offered, although giving up slots at Heathrow is rumoured to be part of the offer.
The EC spokesman said ‘it is assessing the effectiveness of proposed commitments’ put forward by the airlines to allay our concerns that expanding the oneworld alliance may dominate certain transatlantic routes to the detriment of passengers. A spokesman said it would ask rival airlines to examine the changes and would continue to investigate the planned deal until it makes a decision on whether to grant immunity.
