BA CEO Willie Walsh has asked employees to 'pull together' during any strike action by cabin crew, telling them that 1000s of workers have offered to help to help the airline beat any action. Meetings aimed at resolving the long-running and bitter row over jobs and working conditions are continuing this week between BA managers and representatives from the Unite union, with cabin crew holding off naming strike dates while there continues to be the possibility of a deal.
Hopes have been risging in recent days that an agreement might be reached, with the sides reportedly moving closer together. But Mr Walsh said that, regardless of the ongoing talks, the airline is gearing up to look after its passengers in the event of a strike, which the union only needs to give 7 days notice of after the ballot supporting the action announced last week.
Writing in the airline's staff newspaper, Mr Walsh said: 'Thousands of you have come forward to back BA in a variety of ways, including volunteering to work alongside cabin crew who do not strike. I am sure that we'll all do our best for our passengers and fly as many aircraft as possible to keep disruption to a minimum.'
'If the strike goes ahead, we will need closer teamwork than ever. We must do everything possible in order to protect our passenger's travel plans and to retain their confidence in BA.'
The staff newspaper details numerous roles staff will be asked to perform in the event of a strike, including driving staff not striking to various locations at Heathrow and Gatwick.
