Councils call for independent Heathrow regulator

10.03.10

A group of councils all close to Heathrow have called on the Government to set up a new regulator for the aviation industry to overcome concerns over the expansion of the airport. The six local authorities called for the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to be abolished in favour of a brand new impartial watchdog.

Hounslow, Hillingdon, Richmond, Wandsworth, Windsor and Maidenhead councils were responding to a Department for Transport (DfT) consultation on the future of the CAA. Wandsworth Council chief Edward Lister, speaking on behalf of the councils, said: 'Our experience as local authorities during the last 20 years involved with the environmental impact of Heathrow’s operations is that no one bureau is holding either the DfT or the aviation industry to account. The answer is to set up a truly independent body that will act as a champion for consumer and environmental interests alongside its conventional safety and licensing roles.’
