BA has announced that it has struck a deal to build the first plant in Europe to produce jet fuel from waste materials. 500,000 tonnes of waste will be used by the facility each year to produce 16 million gallons of biofuel.
Construction of the plant, to be sited in east London, will start within 2 years and it is set to produce fuel from 2014, creating around 1200 jobs. BA said the plant would produce twice the amount of fuel needed for its flights from London City Airport. However, it will only account for around 2% of the fuel for lights from Heathrow.
