A legal challenge to the Government's decision to back a third runway at Heathrow will be heard at the High Court from next Tuesday (February 23). A coalition of councils, green groups and local campaigners teamed up to back the judicial review. They argue that the decisionis fundamentally flawed, and claims by the Government that it will not breach air and noise quality limits do not add up.
Lawyers representing the coalition will also argue that the decision and scheme announced is fundamentally different from the proposals on which it originally consulted in 2005, meaning the consultation was flawed and the decision is unlawful.
The coalition also believes the economic case for the runway is flawed, and the Government failed to properly consider how the millions of extra passengers generated by the runway will access the airport. The Piccadilly line, for example, will; not be able to cope and expensive transport upgrades may be required - but they were not considered in the consultation.
