Theresa Villiers, the Conservative transport secretary, repeated that her party would block a third runway at Heathrow if it wins the upcoming general election. She said the party would not change its stance opposing the airport's expansion, despite a report from an influential Conservative think tank earlier this month backing the runway.
Ms Villiers made her comments at an event hosted by the British Air Transport Association. The Labour government gave BAA the go-ahead to build a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow last year, but a public consultation is not expected to start until after the national election. The plan faces fierce opposition from local residents and environmental groups, and appears increasingly unlikely to get the go-ahead.
