easyJet and Ryanair battle for top stop at Liverpool Airport

03.11.05

Low-cost rivals easyJet and Ryanair have stepped up their battle for supremacy at Liverpool airport, as the hub's reputation for low-cost flights continues to climb.

Ryanair has landed the latest blow in the on-going battle yesterday, boasting that it has just handled its 4 millionth passenger at JLA since it set up shop in 1988. But its announcement comes hot on the heels of a major route expansion by rival easyJet.

Some 4 out of 14 new routes unveiled by easyJet earlier this month begin at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Services to Krakow in Poland, Marseille and Faro in Portugal will be launched in April, while flights to Menorca will begin operating in July.

But Ryanair was not one to be outdone, especially as it announced that Liverpool Airport was one of its major European hubs in 2004. The no-frills airline operates 20 routes out of the airport and spokesman Karl Hogstadius said this month he 'hopes for more milestones at Liverpool in the future'.

European low-cost rival Wizz Air and regional business airline VLM are also expanding their presence at Liverpool Airpor. Last year the airport saw total passenger numbers jump by almost one third to 4.4 million.
