Plans for compulsory identity cards - to be trialled by staff at Manchester and London City Airport this year - have been dropped this week. Airside workers and pilots at the airports were to be the first to be issued with the cards in first big trials this year.
The Government had planned to roll out the cards to everyone in the UK by 2012. However, on Tuesday afternoon, the new Home Secretary Alan Johnson said changes in the plans meant the airport trials would not now go ahead. He said that ID cards would be ‘a personal choice for British citizens’. Given that most will chose not to have them, the high profile, high cost scheme looks doomed.
