Luton Airport will begin charging drivers £1 to drop-off passengers near the terminal from July 1, despite widespread objections. Drivers will have to stay with their vehicles while inside the 'drop-off zone' and leave within 10 minutes. They will pay at barriers at the exit of the zone.
Drivers who do not wish to pay to use the drop-off zone can leave passengers at the mid-term car park from where a free shuttle bus leaves every 10 minutes for the 2 minute journey to the terminal. The airport hopes the charge will improve traffic flows around the terminal (which has never been a problem when we have used it) and encourage more travellers to use public transport. It will also raise a considerable income, which they did not mention.
