A 'challenging' road scheme, the biggest undertaken by Luton Council, to link the M1 with Luton Airport, was opened last Thursday. The £22m East Luton Corridor saw the A1081 and A505 Airport Way upgraded to a dual carriageway, a new bus-only road from Luton Parkway train station to the airport and a new dual carriageway between Airport Way and Percival Way.
The scheme encountered problems from the start, including the withdrawal of regional funding. Technical problems encountered by contractors also meant that instead of taking 19 months to build it took more than 3 years.
On Thursday the road was opened by Lord McKenzie of Luton, Work & Pensions Minister. The Council says the project has kick-started the redevelopment of the old Vauxhall site, which could become see offices, shopping, warehouses, a hotel / conference centre and up to 2000 homes built.
