Anti-terror police are questioning a man after he was arrested at Manchester Airport on Friday afternoon. Officers are also searching 3 properties following the arrest of Hassan Butt, 31, when he was waiting for a flight to Lahore, Pakistan.
Manchester-born Mr Butt has spoken widely about his past involvement with terrorist activity, claiming to have recruited hundreds of British Muslims for al-Qaeda, However, he says that he has now renounced terrorism. In an interview last month, Mr Butt said: ‘I realised it's not as black and white. How could I justify killing these people because they are living amongst us.’
A police spokesman said armed officers were not involved in the arrest. He confirmed one of the properties being searched was in Bury and another was in north Manchester.
