A light aircraft came off the runway at Newcastle Airport yesterday, causing disruption to a dozen other flights. The 4 seat single engined plane veered on to the grass yesterday lunchtime, causing its nose wheel to collapse and damaging its propeller. Only the pilot was on board at the time and was not injured.
Five flights were diverted - 4 to Durham Tees Valley and 1 to Edinburgh - 2 outbound flights were cancelled and 5 other outbound flights were delayed by 40 minutes because of the incident. An airport spokesman said the Air Accident Investigation Branch had been informed. The runway reopened at 14:00.
